College Scholarship Scams?

I got into a small Twitter (@AidScholarship) verbal sparring match the other day from a student who wondered why I advise others to never pay someone to do your scholarship searching for you, while at the same time charging for my scholarship advice in the form of my scholarship guides. I was a little taken-aback at first, but then explained to him (in 140 characters or less!) that my scholarship guides do not find scholarships FOR you, rather, they TEACH you how to find and apply for scholarships in a unique way. He was nice, I was nice, and we both went on our merry twitter way.

That conversation got me thinking though.

In the years that I have been helping parents and students learn how to create winning scholarship applications, I have never (ever!) gotten any negative feedback. I have also never (ever, ever) had someone ask for their money back after purchasing one of my scholarship guides. I'm pretty darned proud of that fact! To all Monica's followers & visitors to her scholarship site,
Interesting comment about your scholarship guide from the student. As a college & career counselor, I always tell students the same thing, "You shouldn't have to pay money to find scholarships." We all know there are plenty of FREE search engines and scholarship sites. However, slogging through the process is another story altogether. I also have to tell students that applying for scholarships is usually more work than applying to college - and they are tired of the whole process by the time 'scholarship season' rolls around.
